The Slotting Machine (also known as a Vertical Shaper) by National Cutting Tools is an industrial machine tool designed for cutting internal keyways, splines, blind slots, and internal gear profiles. While horizontal shapers and milling machines cannot access the interior of blind bores or deep internal hubs, the vertical reciprocating ram of a slotting machine drives single-point tooling vertically into the bore, generating precise internal features with high dimensional accuracy. Featuring a heavy cast-iron column and base, the machine utilizes a balanced crank or link mechanism to reciprocate the vertical ram. A heavy rotary index table with 360-degree graduation and cross/longitudinal feeds allows precise angular indexing for multi-spline shafts, internal gear teeth, and keyways in hubs, couplings, and scaffolding components. Key Features Vertical Reciprocating Ram with Tilting Head: Ram tilts up to 10 degrees on either side for machining tapered internal keyways and draft angles. 360-Degree Graduated Rotary Table: Precision worm-gear rotary table with dividing plate enables accurate angular spacing for internal splines. Three-Axis Power Feeds: Automatic power feeds on longitudinal, cross, and circular table axes for continuous machining without manual intervention. Quick-Return Motion: Crank and link mechanism provides a fast upward stroke, minimizing non-cutting cycle time. Hand-Scraped Vertical Guideways: Flat ways coated with continuous lubrication grooves prevent ram deflection under heavy slotting cuts. Positive Tool Relief Clapper: Automatically swings cutting tool away from the workpiece bore during upward return to prevent tool chipping.
