Selling Packaged Food Stock: FSSAI, Batch and Expiry Rules

Category guides: Selling Packaged Food Stock: FSSAI, Batch and Expiry Rules

Surplus inventory in the food and beverage industry represents a high-velocity trading opportunity for wholesale grocers, modern trade distributors, and institutional catering suppliers. Factory overproduction, cancelled retail promotions, and distributor warehouse rationalization regularly release large volumes of packaged food and FMCG products into secondary B2B channels.

However, food trading in India is governed by strict public safety laws under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). While industrial machinery or fabric can be traded freely as scrap or seconds, food items carry zero tolerance for compromised packaging or missing regulatory credentials.

Here are the mandatory compliance rules for listing and buying packaged food inventory on Bikwao.

1. Sealed factory packaging only: zero loose food

Bikwao permits exclusively sealed, brand-packaged food and beverages.

  • Permitted inventory: Factory-sealed tetra packs, canned goods, biscuits in original pouches, packaged dry snacks, confectionery in sealed master jars, and bottled beverages in tamper-evident caps.
  • Strictly prohibited goods: Loose grains, unbranded bulk spices, loose pulses, raw agricultural commodities, fresh fruits, vegetables, unpacked sweets, fresh dairy, and home-cooked items.
  • Packaging integrity: Cartons must have intact factory seals. Punctured tetra packs, dented tin cans, swollen pouches, or rodent-damaged corrugated outers are completely rejected.

Browse verified manufacturers and authorized FMCG distributors under FMCG, Packaged Foods & Daily Provisions on Bikwao.

2. Mandatory 14-digit FSSAI license verification

Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, every business dealing with food manufacturing, storage, wholesale, or distribution must possess a valid FSSAI registration or license.

When listing or purchasing food stock lots:

  1. 14-digit license check: Every seller must declare an active 14-digit FSSAI license number.
  2. Category authorization: The FSSAI license must cover the specific food product category being traded (e.g., proprietary foods, bakery items, or fruit juices).
  3. Packaging display: Ensure that the original manufacturer's FSSAI logo and 14-digit number are clearly printed on the retail packs, as required by FSSAI Labelling and Display Regulations.

Anyone can verify an FSSAI license number for free on the official government portal at foscos.fssai.gov.in. Never trade food inventory with suppliers who cannot produce a valid food license.

3. Batch numbers and date declarations

Every food stock listing must disclose complete batch and date parameters before going live:

Required fieldWhy it is mandatory
Batch / Lot numberEnables traceability back to the factory production line
Date of manufactureEstablishes the total original shelf life
Best before / Expiry dateEnsures inventory can be legally distributed to end consumers
Net weight & MRPRequired by Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules

A listing stating "one truckload biscuits near expiry" without batch codes and exact dates will not pass editorial approval.

4. The 7-day automatic expiry cutoff rule

To prevent compromised or expired products from entering consumer markets, Bikwao enforces an automated safety rule:

  • Cutoff timeline: Any food listing is automatically hidden from public search, category pages, and sitemaps exactly 7 days prior to its stated best-before or expiry date.
  • Lead time for buyers: Buyers purchasing short-dated food inventory need sufficient logistical buffer to transport goods, clear inbound receiving, and distribute them to end consumers before the expiry date arrives.
  • No near-expiry dumping: Stock with less than 15 days of remaining shelf life at the time of initial listing is refused to protect marketplace buyers.

For the complete list of prohibited commodities and marketplace safety guidelines, consult the Bikwao listing policy.

5. Storage standards and transport conditions

Packaged food products degrade rapidly if stored or moved in substandard conditions:

  • Temperature sensitivity: Chocolate, dairy-based powders, and confections require air-conditioned or climate-controlled warehousing (below 25°C) to prevent melting, fat blooming, or rancidity.
  • Pest management: Godowns must have active pest control certificates and raised wooden or plastic pallets. Stacking food cartons directly on damp cement floors causes moisture absorption and mold growth inside outer cartons.
  • Smell contamination: Food cartons must never be stored in the same godown bay as chemical solvents, fertilizers, paints, or perfumed detergents, as outer packaging easily absorbs strong odors.

Inspect sample cartons personally at the warehouse. If outer packaging shows oil leakage, swelling, or odor absorption, reject the lot immediately.

Questions

Can I list unbranded or loose food commodities on Bikwao?

No. Bikwao strictly prohibits loose, fresh, or unbranded food items. Only factory-sealed packaged food with printed manufacturer details, FSSAI credentials, batch numbers, and expiry dates is accepted.

What happens if a food listing reaches its expiry date while active?

The site automatically hides the listing 7 days before its best-before or expiry date. It disappears from all search results, category listings, and city directories to guarantee buyer safety.

Do I need to be FSSAI-registered to buy food stock lots?

Yes. In India, anyone purchasing food items in commercial wholesale quantities for resale, distribution, or institutional catering must hold a valid FSSAI license or registration covering wholesale or food service operations.
