Paper, Duplex Board & Reel Surplus: GSM, Grain & Moisture

Category guides: Paper, Duplex Board & Reel Surplus: GSM, Grain & Moisture

The paper, packaging board, and printing industry in India consumes millions of tonnes of virgin and recycled paper annually. Major paper manufacturing belts in Gujarat (Vapi, Surat), Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab supply corrugated box plants, commercial offset printers, and notebook publishers.

Surplus inventory in paper and printing supplies and stationery and office supplies occurs frequently: cancelled print jobs, side-trim reels from corrugators, over-ordered art paper from textbook seasons, and excess stock of grey-back duplex board.

Trading surplus paper reels and sheet stock offers steady turnover, but paper is an hygroscopic commodity. A slight change in moisture content or crushed paper reel cores can render expensive paper unusable on high-speed printing presses.

Here is what printing managers and paper traders inspect before purchasing surplus paper stock in India.

1. GSM Verification and Sheet Tolerances

Paper is bought and sold on weight: Grams per Square Meter (GSM).

How to Check GSM Accurately

Never rely on the mill tag pasted on the outside of a wrapped reel or pallet:

  1. Cut out a precise $10 \times 10\text{ cm}$ square $(100\text{ cm}^2)$ specimen from sheets taken 5 layers deep inside the ream.
  2. Weigh the sample on a high-precision digital scale sensitive to 0.01 grams.
  3. Multiply the gram weight by 100 to get the exact GSM (e.g., a $0.80\text{ gram}$ reading on a $100\text{ cm}^2$ swatch equals $80\text{ GSM}$).

Common Paper Grades and Applications

GradeTypical GSM RangePrimary ApplicationKey Surplus Risk
Kraft Paper (Fluting / Liner)100 to 250 GSM (14 to 28 BF)Corrugated shipping boxesLow Bursting Factor (BF), tear along edge
Coated Duplex Board (LWC/HWC)230 to 450 GSMMono-cartons (cosmetics, pharmaceuticals)Cracked coating on crease folds
C2S Art Paper / Art Card90 to 350 GSMMagazines, brochures, luxury calendarsStatic cling, yellowing edges
Maplitho / Copier Paper58 to 80 GSMNotebooks, bills, office Xerox copyingHigh curl in laser printers, opacity bleed

2. Paper Reels: Core Damage and Web Tension

When buying surplus paper reels (reels of kraft, newsprint, or thermal paper):

  • Core Diameter and Condition: Standard industrial cores are 3 inches (76 mm) or 6 inches (152 mm) diameter heavy cardboard tubes. Check whether the core has been crushed or ovalised during transit or clamp-truck handling. If the inner core is deformed, the reel cannot be mounted on high-speed rewinder shafts or offset press reel stands.
  • Roll Edge Damage: Inspect reel edges (the circular sides). If forklift tines or crane slings have cut or gouged the edge by even 5 mm, web breaks will occur continuously as the roll unwinds on the press, halting operations.
  • Telescoping: If reel layers have shifted sideways like a cone (telescoping), winding tension was uneven at the paper mill. Such reels run with severe lateral flutter on printing machines.

3. Sheet Stock: Grain Direction and Moisture Curl

For sheet-fed offset printing and folding carton converting:

  1. Grain Direction (Short Grain vs Long Grain): The alignment of paper cellulose fibers (Grain Long - GL vs Grain Short - GS) dictates folding performance. Paper folds smoothly along the grain; folding against the grain causes fibre cracking and rough edges on luxury cartons. Check whether pallet labels disclose grain direction.
  2. Moisture Content and Wavy Edges: Paper expands and contracts across the grain as relative humidity changes. When cold, dry paper reams are unwrapped in a humid godown, the edges absorb ambient moisture, creating "wavy edges" that jam sheet feeders on multicolor offset presses.
  3. Moisture Meter Test: Use a handheld pinless paper moisture meter. Standard print paper should test between 4.5% and 6.5% moisture content. Stock testing over 8.5% is waterlogged.

4. Paper Logistics and Weight Calculations

Paper is heavy and moisture-sensitive:

  • Weighbridge Verification: Always weigh full trucks on gross and tare scales. Factor in whether wet weather during open-tarpaulin transport has artificially inflated total reel weight.
  • Calculations: Use Bikwao’s free business tools and unit calculators to convert reel meterage, roll diameters, and weight to area square meters.

Questions

What does "BF" mean in kraft paper?

"BF" stands for Bursting Factor, which measures the burst resistance of kraft paper under hydraulic pressure. Bursting Strength (in $kg/cm^2$) divided by GSM and multiplied by 1,000 gives the Burst Factor. Higher BF paper (e.g., 24 BF or 28 BF) is required for heavy export shipping cartons.

What is the difference between white-back and grey-back duplex board?

Grey-back duplex board is manufactured with a top layer of bleached virgin or high-grade white pulp over recycled grey newsprint waste backing. White-back duplex board has a bleached white reverse side, offering higher hygiene and premium aesthetics for food and pharmaceutical packaging.

What is the GST rate on paper and paperboard in India?

Most uncoated paper and paperboard (HSN 4802), kraft paper (HSN 4804), and folding carton boards (HSN 4810) carry a 12% GST rate. Office exercise notebooks and registers (HSN 4820) also carry 12% GST, while printed books are exempt (0% GST).
