Kitchen Utensils & Houseware Lots: Stainless Steel Grades

Category guides: Kitchen Utensils & Houseware Lots: Stainless Steel Grades

Household cookware, commercial dining utensils, and daily kitchenware represent a massive evergreen consumer category across India. Manufacturing hubs in Jagadhri (Haryana), Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh), Chennai, and Ahmedabad produce thousands of tonnes of metal and plastic housewares each month.

Surplus inventory in kitchen utensils and appliances and housewares and cleaning supplies frequently originates from cancelled festival corporate gift schemes, seasonal wedding overruns, or hotel chain renovations.

However, kitchen utensils are valued strictly on metallurgy, metal gauge (thickness), and safety compliance. A lot of stainless steel dinner plates that looks identical to a premium set may actually be stamped from cheap magnetic scrap metal.

Here is how to evaluate and price surplus kitchenware and housewares in India.

1. Stainless Steel Utensils: The 200 vs 300 Series Breakdown

The wholesale price of a stainless steel utensil lot depends on the chemical composition of the stainless steel sheet:

Stainless Steel GradeTypical CompositionKey CharacteristicsTrade Valuation
SS 304 (18/8 or 18/10)18% Chromium, 8% NickelHighly rust-proof, food-grade, austenitic, non-magneticPremium pricing (Rs 280 to Rs 360+ per kg)
SS 200 Series (J4 / JSLU)Low Nickel (1-2%), Manganese addedModerate corrosion resistance, weakly magneticMid-tier everyday domestic grade (Rs 150 to Rs 210 per kg)
SS 430 (Ferritic)16-18% Chromium, 0% NickelMagnetic, induction compatible, prone to water spottingEconomy grade (Rs 120 to Rs 160 per kg)

The Magnet & Acid Drop Test

  • The Neodymium Magnet Test: High-end austenitic SS 304 is non-magnetic (though slight magnetism can develop around deep-drawn corners during cold forming). SS 430 and cheap recycled scrap sheets are strongly magnetic. If a magnet sticks firmly to the flat bottom of a bowl, it is not SS 304.
  • Moly / Chemical Drop Test: Use a small bottle of copper sulphate acid testing solution. Place a single drop on a clean scratched area of the metal. If the drop turns pink/copper within 6 seconds, the steel lacks nickel and belongs to the lower 200 or 400 series.

2. Metal Gauge and Weight Discrepancies

In Indian utensil trade, goods are often negotiated by weight (per kilogram) or sheet thickness gauge (Standard Wire Gauge - SWG):

  • Heavy Gauge (18 to 20 SWG / 1.0mm to 1.2mm): Heavy hotel-grade thalis, thick kadhais, and professional stock pots. High durability, does not warp under intense heat.
  • Medium Gauge (22 to 24 SWG / 0.6mm to 0.7mm): Standard retail consumer thalis, bowls, and tiffin boxes.
  • Light / Paper Gauge (26 to 28 SWG / 0.4mm to 0.5mm): Cheap promotional giveaways. Warps easily, dents during transport, and burns food on direct gas flames.

The Weighbridge Check: When buying a 5-tonne lot of utensils, verify average unit weights against the manufacturer's manifest. If an 18-inch thali was supposed to weigh 420 grams but random samples weigh only 330 grams, the manufacturer rolled thin sheets to save raw material costs.

3. Domestic Pressure Cookers: Mandatory ISI Mark (IS 2347)

Under the Pressure Cookers (Quality Control) Order issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, all domestic pressure cookers manufactured, imported, or sold in India must carry a mandatory ISI certification mark under IS 2347.

Critical Safety Checkpoints

If a clearance lot includes pressure cookers:

  1. Fusible Safety Plug: Must contain genuine bismuth-tin eutectic alloy that melts reliably if the vent weight pipe gets clogged.
  2. Gasket Release System (GRS): Inspect the silicone or nitrile rubber gasket. Brittle or aged rubber gaskets will fail to seal or blow out violently.
  3. Weight Valve (Vent Weight): Must weigh to factory tolerance (typically 35 to 45 grams) to regulate pressure at precisely 1.0 kg/cm² (15 psi).
  4. BIS CM/L License Number: Stamped directly on the lid and cooker body. Never trade or liquidate uncertified pressure cookers; doing so carries severe criminal liabilities under product safety laws.

4. Cookware Non-Stick Coatings and Enamel

In surplus non-stick cookware lots:

  • PFOA-Free Certification: Modern buyers demand PTFE coatings certified 100% free of PFOA and heavy metals.
  • Dry-Film Thickness (DFT): Use a coating thickness gauge. Premium cookware features 3-layer or 5-layer granite/ceramic coatings (35 to 45 microns); cheap promotional sets feature single-coat spray (under 15 microns) that scratches off on first use.

Questions

What does "18/8" stainless steel mean on cookware?

18/8 denotes the metallurgical composition of the alloy: 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Chromium provides exceptional hardness and rust prevention, while nickel provides deep luster, acid corrosion resistance, and non-magnetic austenitic crystal structure.

Is it legal to sell utensils manufactured without BIS registration?

For general stainless steel plates, bowls, and cutlery, BIS is recommended but not universally mandatory under QCOs. However, domestic pressure cookers (IS 2347) have mandatory ISI marking requirements under Indian law.

What is the GST rate on kitchen utensils and pressure cookers?

Stainless steel utensils, cutlery, and kitchen tableware fall under HSN 7323, attracting 12% GST. Domestic pressure cookers fall under HSN 7615 (aluminium) or 7323 (stainless steel), also attracting 12% GST. Electrical kitchen appliances (mixers, blenders, induction cooktops) fall under HSN 8516, attracting 18% GST.
